Cruise to Stockholm
This is a small gallery of my photos from Stockholm. They are a bit blurry, and occasionally not even properly cropped. I'm still getting used to shooting with the small digital compact camera, and it's hard. It's so different from my trusty old Canon EOS-50E, especially when framing the pic in portrait. The batterypack of the Canon just makes things so much more stable. But I'm getting better with the compact, at least I can carry it with me almost everywhere, and it does have manual focus and focusing (but not aperture or exposure time, at least I haven't found them yet).
The trip to Stockholm was Feb 28th - March 1st, and I spent the Feb 29th in Stockholm with Maria and Tuuli touring the museums and a bit of Gamla Stan, the old downtown of Stockholm. The museums we visited were Historiska Museet (Historical Museum) and Medeltidiga Museet (Medieval Museum). For some strange reason I have no pics from the medieval museum, it was interesting, but it just was no match to the Historiska. If you are going to see these museums, go to the medieval museum first, it has some very intereseting displays there, although it's a kind of a mix between a serious museum, and a dumbed-down-for-kids museum.
But, now the pics.
Approaching Stockholm
These were taken from the top-deck of the Viking Gabriella, as we approached Stockholm.
A wide angle view and a closeup of a statue on the left
side of the previous photo. The close-up is a bit
pixelized, I tried to adjust the color-balance and
exposure afterwards, my head didn't work too well early
in the morning.
Oscars Kyrkan
This church is across the street from the Historiska Museum, if you get to the museum before it opens, check the walls and ceiling here. The altar and one of the stained glass windows on the side walls.
Skansen
Historiska Museet
The Historiska Museet had the permanent displays of Vikings, Medieval Church Art and Medieval Textiles, and temporary displays of Viking is Åland, and a display about death called "Memento Mori". I was more interested in the Viking-displays, so my photos are from there. A significant dispay in the basement called Gulrummet, gold room, is filled with artefact found in archeological digs and hoards from Gotland, about 3000 items total. Unfortunately photography was forbidden there, so I can only tell you this: go see the display, it is awesome.Note, these pics are especially blurry, as the flash and a tripod were not allowed inside the museum (nor did I have them with me anyways).
A button or something like that.
Gold wire, I'm not sure if these are neclases, or if
they were sown into fabrics as decorations.
A weird object with interesting engravings and motifs.
I can't quite figure out what it is, and I forgot to
read the description.
A brooch from a woman's dress.
I think this is a counter-balance from a Viking sword.
A few hammers, the one sideways reminds me of a
Danish hammer, it's almost identical to one of mine.
A horse figurine, it didn't seem to have a hole for a chain.
Picture stone, you can spot several famous images in this one.
Gamla Stan
The old town has some very narrow streets, the narrowest we walked thru was under 2 meters (7 feet) wide. I just barely couldn't touch both walls at the same time.
A square right off the King's Castle. The narrow street
is between the yellow and green building across the
square.
A street leading left from the above picture, from the
opposite corner.
Take the narrow street (no good pics), and this is the
view right behind the house.
